Congresswoman Kavitha Reddy Publicly Apologizes for Moral Policing of Actor Samyukta Hegde and Her Friends
On 4 September, Kavitha Reddy apparently assaulted and verbally harassed Actor Samyukta Hegde and her friends in a public park for wearing indecent clothes which are seen as an act of ‘moral policing’ in 2020. The three girls were found to be dressed in a sports bra and pants. Kavitha Reddy brought along with her a group of men.
She took to Twitter and Instagram Live to show the world the injustice happening to her. In the video, a man is openly threatening her and her friends while the police were just standing and listening. Kavitha Reddy faced a lot of backlash for her actions. Being a liberal politician, this moral condemning seemed hypocritical. She also has a column of ‘women empowerment’ on her website which now makes it ironic.
Kavitha Reddy was also quick to take on Twitter to diss the women. She commented “Seems this Samyukta Hegde has enough of drama history…!” and also called Samyuktha a cheap actor who wants publicity, in a now-deleted tweet. Post 3 days, Kavitha Reddy took to Twitter to apologize to Samyuktha and her friends. She also gave a written letter to her. Samyuktha Hegde has publicly accepted her apology and hopes that no other woman has to go through this type of an incident and that they can move on with their lives.
Even though Samyuktha accepted her apology, she took to the internet to let them know that she thought it was a fake apology and called it a ‘façade.
This is because if she wanted to apologize, she would’ve done it at that very moment or just hours later and not after 3 days for the sake of it. In her video, she still claims that she did not assault her friend. She also bases her claim for the same by showing that Kavitha Reddy did not delete her public comments about the incident 16 hours after her public apology. These are, however, now deleted.
Kavitha Reddy has been booked under sections 323, 504(b) and 506 of the IPC in connection with her alleged attack on actress Samyuktha Hegde and two of her friends. However, Samyukta has said that she told the police to not pursue her case and take charge of the male assaulters like Anil Reddy
